Melodious poetry that really speaks to you. This is a little book but packed with great poems that are so clear and so deep. Here's a stanza from one poem that keeps rattling thhrough my head: "Enlighten your desires. Meditate on who you are. Quit imagining." It goes on but its sttanzas like that that can give you a kick in the pants to contemplate some things. Its just a terrific collection of poems. Glad I bought the book!

Nobody Owns the Sky: The Story of "Brave Bessie" Coleman

Nobody Owns the Sky
This book was about a young colored girl whose dream was to fly in the sky like the birds. It tells her tale about how she finally was able to fly even though everyone always was told her that she couldn't. I like this book because it involved both the difficulties of the different races and genders. The young colored girl ends up having to go to Paris to learn to fly and even though she dies in one of her flights she was still able to influence other young girls. After reading the book I felt motivated and empowered. The author teaches young to always stay stead fast to their dreams even if others around them tell them it can't happen

Wow!
Absolutely awesome picture book biography! Told in verse and beautifully illustrated, the historical link between author and subject makes for an amazing teaching tool in the classroom! This book is so very underrated in the public's eyes. Buy a class set for your classroom!

Comments from friends who have read "Pieces"
"I am enjoying your book... YOUR BOOK!!!!...It's so wonderful! OH MY GOD!!!! Everything is so good...I can't tell you enough...no, I'm not gushing... I feel so comfortable with your poetry. I've seen it evolve and grow all these years. It is another way of knowing you." J. C., former tenor with San Diego Opera, now, teacher of voice, Cumberland, RI.

"I read your book on the train and am delighted. It is a little gem. Most of the poems I was privileged to have read before but there were a few surprises. And those lovely pink "flowers" on the cover are really clouds! How ingenious." G. C., Long Island, New York.

"You know that I like your poetry! They are about memory, emotion, intelligence, and self-awareness; plus, they are artful to the core! You seem to be able to resist being trapped by simplistic rules.
"There is no question that details are elusive, that our memories fade, but you miraculously 'lift the mist' that hangs over the past, your past. You seem to take possession of scenes and events, find the personal, and identify that which has poetic potential.
"Well, the book is a triumph. The poems not only are precious, they are ethical too. My favorite is "The Shop" -- but I like them all. I've not read Story Poems with diligence, but will. One thing I do know, though, is that your poems help us to appreciate life." CSJ@Berkeleycollege,edu.

"As I was browsing through your book, I came across the poem about your father's workshop. I lost my dear daddy last year and a lot of my memories are of him in his workshop. It was a very poignant poem for me." B. W., Librarian, Jersey Shore, PA.

Pot Likker: Stories for Teachers and Learners

More Pot Likker, Please!!
What an appropriate name for a book of nourishing stories, those from the heart and parables of the spirit. I read Pot Likker in a few hours, savoring the lessons learned, the insights shared, and the fortitude expressed. Many of the stories exemplify the line from a spiritual, "I Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around!" The contributors all evince a right-mindedness, that sisterly and brotherly love we so desperately need to demonstrate to one another.

Hopefully, Larry and Deborah Peaks Coleman, the editors of Pot Likker, will edit more collections, for I am hooked!

Pot Likker: Stories for Teachers and Learners
The editors Larry and Deborah Coleman have done agreat job of compiling stories that relate to real life situations. As I began to read the stories I felt as if I was a part of what was being said. I picked up this book with the intent of reading only a few stories and found the book magnetic! I was drawn to continue reading, I enjoyed not only one story but allof the ones that I read. They made me reflect on situations in my life and allowed me to see myself. This bok is a refreshing collection of stories, that provide something for everyone. I recommend that every that every educator, parent and instructor have this as part of their collection. If this were a pot of soup, I'd be tipping the pot to be sure to get every drop.

Robert Stivers: Photographs
Published in Hardcover by Arena Editions (September, 1997)
Authors: Robert Stivers and A. D. Coleman
Average review score:

Haunting, mysterious, sensual, erotic
This magnificent coffee table book is filled with captivating photos that draw you into Stivers' world. The hazy b/w images range from to erotic and sensual to almost haunting and mysterious.

The photographer captures a wide variety of subjects including people of all ages, babies, body parts & single objects. Animals including elephants, birds, reptiles & dogs are also shown.

All the photos are printed on one page making it easy to cut them out and frame them if so desired. Plate numbers are listed opposite the photos with a list of titles in the back.

My favorite images are those of the women. One is a nude woman holding a knife and another is suspended. I also enjoyed the leopard & ostrich photos. This intense book is sure to please any art collector.

Eerie, cryptic images that evoke strong reactions
Robert Stivers work is among the most interesting in contemporary photography. His use of focus (or "un-focus") enhances ordinary images in ways that make them seem surreal and embodying a depth of meaning not otherwise apparent. It is unable to come away from them without some sense of unease. He does not evoke indifference...most are drawn to his work or strongly dislike it.

A Stubborn Pine in a Stiff Wind
Published in Paperback by Edwin Mellen Press (December, 2001)
Author: Earl M. Coleman
Average review score:

The Best Compilation of Poetry to date!
With this compilation, author Earl Coleman has far surpassed any other work of poetry in our day. His use of the language and poetic prose is amazing, and very satisfying. I could not recommend any compilation more than this one. It is nothing short of a masterpiece of modern literature.

A Stubborn Pine In A Stiff Wind: A Review: By Zach Wigon
Earl M. Coleman, master of poetry & fiction, has produced a fantastic work with "A Stubborn Pine In A Stiff Wind". Coleman's words flow so effortlessly, so beautifully, and demonstrate enough cadence to be lyrics to a song. This is the poetry compilation he's been waiting over 50 years to produce, and it is quite a gem. Unfortunately, he's extremely underappreciated by the American public, but hopefully this book can change that and earn him more renown. This is one of the best books of poetry I've ever read. You MUST buy this book.

Texas Haunted Forts

Texas Haunted Forts
You don't have to be a Texan to be fascinated by the stories in this book. Anyone who loves history or who has an interest in the paranormal will be intrigued. I've given numerous copies as gifts and the recipients really liked them. Not every story is appropriate for young children but this would be a great book for students in upper grades to read to learn about the frontier through stories that are easy and enjoyable to read.

Good Reading Even for the Skeptic
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, Texas Haunted Forts makes for entertaining reading. The history of forts throughout Texas is an integral part, and the tales of dances, battles, and devotion bring history to life. Be careful, though. You might actually believe there's a chance history is still alive by the time you finish the book!

Tom Slick and the Search for the Yeti
Published in Paperback by Faber & Faber (December, 1989)
Author: Loren Coleman
Average review score:

Fascinating read
The first copy I had I loaned to a fellow researcher and never got it back. I had to buy another, but I would not trade this copy for anything. I had it signed at last years Ohio Bigfoot conference where Loren Coleman gave a talk.

The book is excellent and is one of the top on my list. It gives me more information on what took place during the Slick era than what Peter Byrne told me, which wasn't too much.

I hear there may be an update issued soon. Buy it! You won't regret it if you are interested in some of the history surrounding the quest of the Yeti. Good job Loren!!!

Lost classic

I read this book years ago, perhaps having obtained it from William Corliss' "Sourcebook" list of books. This is typical of Coleman's books -- well researched, well written, and free of the kind of personal anecdote litter and unsubstantiated claims that so characterizes David Hatcher Childress' many efforts.

Buy it, read it, enjoy it.

Tom Slick: True Life Encounters in Cryptozoology
Published in Paperback by Linden Publishing (June, 2002)
Author: Loren Coleman
Average review score:

interesting on all fronts
The book starts off with the background to Tom Slick's family, which in itself was entertaining ,and then on to Tom's expeditions. The book, although a true story, reads like an adventure novel. I'm only sad Tom Slick is no longer with us as I think he is a great loss to the scientific community ,with his zest for investigating the usual. The ending of the book and the stories of involvement with the CIA gave great food for thought and I won't spoil anyone's enjoyment of the book by going into more detail.I would recommend this book to anyone, whether a cryptozoologist or not, as it entertains as well as informs. I emailed the author to say how much I enjoyed the book and was delighted to receive a reply. This is a book that deserves to be read.

Named in The Anomalist Book Awards 2002
Recommended as one of the outstanding cryptozoology books of the year by The Anomalist Book Awards & Book List 2002.
